What's your favorite way to eat oats?

It’s National Oatmeal Day today and as I sit here eating my steaming bowl of homemade pumpkin pie oatmeal, I think of all the other ways we can eat oats.

Oats are so versatile and one of the best foods you can eat. They are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. To learn more about the health benefits, refer to our “Why Oats” blog.

Here in the Oatball Kitchen, we love making oatballs in various flavors, but oats can be used in so many other recipes. There are some great ideas in the article, 50 things to make with oats.

Oats can be used in savory recipes like meatloaf and salmon cakes. Oats are a great substitute for breadcrumbs in these recipes as they are lower in calories and carbs and higher in fiber and contain no sodium. Oats make a great binder and since they don’t provide extra flavor, the seasonings and spices you use come through.

Oats are used in many desserts as well. Think oatmeal raisin cookies or the topping for apple crisp. Granola isn’t a dessert, but oats are the foundation for this recipe. Add some dried fruits and nuts, bake ‘em all together, and you have a delicious snack or breakfast cereal that tastes like a dessert!

Did you also know that oats are great for your skin and hair? Oatmeal can soak up excess oil and help treat acne. Oatmeal masks for your hair can also add moisture and silkiness.
